Vacation Bible School 2011 Hometown Nazareth
Everyone knows what it’s like to hear your mom tell stories from your childhood. Can you imagine the stories Mary could tell? Your kids will go back to Hometown Nazareth, where they’ll stand up for their faith among people who doubt that the carpenter’s son is really God’s Son.
Monday, July 25, 2011: All this week, the kids of All Saints Episcopal Church and some of their friends will be going back in time to learn about when Jesus was a kid himself. In four tribes, the kids will visit Mary's house and learn stories of Jesus childhood and also interact with the people that live in Nazareth alongside Joseph the carpenter's son. Do they realize that the Messiah lives among them? Or do they just think he's a normal kid like everyone else?
Fun with music, crafts, and food will make Hometown Nazareth come alive every night this week.
Tuesday, July 26, 2011: The visit to Hometown Nazareth continued. Each night begins with a meal provided by one of our numerous volunteers. Then the kids participate in one of the many activities that take place during each day.
Wednesday, July 27, 2011: Each day during Hometown Nazareth the children take a visit to Mary's house where they learn stories of Jesus' childhood. But they are confronted with the fact that not everyone in Nazareth believes that the Jesus they grew up with is the Messiah.
(Part I)
Every night there are also time of reflection and teaching in the Hometown Huddles, where the kids talk about what they have learned.
Thursday, July 28, 2011: Tonight I didn't have much time to take videos as I was also filling in as the rabbi teaching in the Hometown Nazareth Synagogue School. It was fun interacting with the kids in a more personal way, and I got to act confused as they discussed modern things that I (as a first century Nazarene) had no idea what it was. But Lynda saved the day (as usual) and took a few brief videos of outdoor games with her camera phone.
Friday, July 29, 2011: It has been a long week in Hometown Nazareth, but I am very impressed with what the kids have done and what the adult (and young adult) volunteers made happen here at All Saints. It was a great time of sharing and learning and fun. We can all be proud of the ministry that was presented. As a final look at the events of the week, here is a video of the God Sightings Wall. It was here all week that the kids put examples of where they see God around them. |
